Misconceptions about Renewable Energy

The Technology is too new and unproven.

Federal, State and local power regulatory agencies have facilitated growth in our country by passing legislation requiring that strict rules be applied to the generation and transmission of power to promote uniformity and lower operational costs. Solar silicon cell power generation has been in operation for over 50 years, wind turbine power generation has been in use for several hundred years. These forms of energy generation are some of the most proven and reliable on earth, ask the Dutch. The Neatherlands is now a NET ENERGY EXPORTER. The California coast in many locations shares the same energy belt as the Neatherlands, yet where are the wind turbines on the central California Coast?

It's not the technology that is holding us back, it's the regulations.

In a presentation to a local Lions club in March 2011 by a high ranking PG and E official, it was noted by the speaker that 21 separate and overlapping  agencies govern wave energy power transmission in the ocean off the central California coast. World wide technology exists and is in use in other countries to take advantage of wave kinetic energy, dramatically lowering energy generation costs 24 hours a day. It was determined that the cost of approval process and the time required for permits was too long and too high in cost to make this free energy competitive with fossil fuel and nuclear power, too bad, but not true!

Solar and Wind Turbine power is complicated and expensive to hook up.

Electric power companies private and municipal, have become increasingly aware of the capability of individuals and small organizations to generate their own power through the use of easily available kinetic energy sources as wind, solar and water. New technology is now available that converts the power generated by Solar to be converted directly to AC on the panels enabling them to simply be plugged into a wall socket. The same is true of small wind turbines.

We must protect the environment at all costs.

Many areas of the south western desert in this country are ideal for solar power generation. Recently SunPower Corp. sought and recived  approval for a 250 megawatt solar generating facility on the desolate Carrizo plane of eastern San Luis Obispo county California. The approval process had become bogged down with special interest groups leading the charge in an attempt to protect the Kangaroo-rat and the Kit Fox that eats this critter. Kangaroo Rats are capable of producing liters of 10 off springs every 90 days or to go from 10 individuals to 1,000 in a year, to over 100,000 in less than 2 years over running the area. This action and actions like this have dramatically increased all project costs. Fortunately the  regulators saw through this attempt and reached an agreement with all so that this much needed project can move forward in the fall of 2011, producing enough free solar energy to power most of the county. (2015 update, now the Kit Fox and his food the Kangaroo Rats are more common than ever on the plains)

Wind Turbines are destroying all the birds.

In a recent study in the Journal of Ornithology in Feb. 2014, on the mortality of birds, it was found that the number 1 killer of birds was cats. Many of the wind turbine projects in the country were declined or buried in the approval process because of lobbying by special interest groups. These groups site the injury and death to birds by these devices. In a study by the American Bird Conservancy it was estimated that 500 million birds (500,000,000) are killed each year by cats. Hawaii's exotic bird populations has been nearly wiped out by ship stowayways and the Mongoose imported to control the non-native creatures.   In contrast about 440,000 birds were killed by wind turbines to 2013, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This number is expected to rise to over 1 million as wind turbines take over more of the power generation in the U.S. Perhaps cats should be required by government to wear muzzles and be declawed to prevent this, or banned from private ownership altogether like the Ferrit is in California.

Wake up America

Oil has been a inexpensive resource for many decades in the USA. With 90% of the easily recoverable oil found, the cost of drilling in sensitive areas of the  USA  is sky-rocketing or prohibited altogether. The political instability in oil producing areas of the world is also causing rapid increases in the cost of oil.

America still has it

It is predicted that our total green energy production will exceed 20% by 2020. This will  cut our dependency on oil by 5 million barrels per day and creating millions of jobs.

Renewable resources are abundant in our nation,  including solar, wind, water, and wave kinetic energy. We also have the 3rd largest reserves of rare-earth minerals in the world, the kind that batteries and solar panels use! (97% of these elements now comes from China.) :(
